As you can guess from this blog’s title, I’m a radio guy and have been for most of my adult life. Sports play-by-play is my passion, but I’ve been on the air in various capacities over the years. I’m also a native New Yorker who now calls Houston home after previously residing in Syracuse, New York; Yakima, Washington; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Binghamton, New York and Kansas City, Kansas. All of those moves have been the result of my desire to talk for a living. I have a daughter who’s the most beautiful young lady on earth, in my opinion.
I never know what to say when I’m asked what this blog is about. My posts are often about sports, especially baseball, and radio, but sometimes I write about something completely different. More than anything, this blog is about me. It’s a window into my life and into my thoughts and experiences. It’s a way to get me to write on a regular basis, something I’ve struggled to do most of my life even though I enjoy writing. Keeping a journal has never worked for me long term. Blogging is the best way I’ve found to get me to write regularly. I guess you could say this blog is my journal, except anyone can read it. I hope you enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoy writing it.
Hear you most nights and love your show! God bless you for putting up with the countless impatient KC fans each night, and for the great baseball talk all the time. A lot of what I’ve learned about the game–common sense-wise–I’ve heard on your show and appreciate your effort.
I’m an aspiring baseball writer and I recently got a “job” writing for both Missouri teams at I-70 Baseball. So, I set up this site to get my thoughts in order for my weekly I-70 article. I’d be honored if you could give it a look! http://bit.ly/j1D2kZ
Thanks again…
So, you only get a day off when the Royals do? Tough break! I enjoy listening to your post game commentary. I don’t always agree with you, but you’re knowledgeable and entertaining. Cheers!
Hi Rob,
I’ve known you on and off for at least 11 years and always enjoy your comments. Of course, you and I are both native New Yorkers, Syracuse alumni and sportscasters as well.
Besides John Sterling, the late great Mel Allen, the legendary and original “Voice of the Yankees” had his going, going, gone home run calls. Sometimes he would have to say, “Going, going, caught!” as well. Everyone has a different style and it should be one to be developed and part of that broadcaster’s persona. Of course, I believe in letting the fans know that the GAME is the show and not the announcer, who should be a guide and storyteller.
I’ve been fortunate to grow up listening to Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner for the Mets and the Scooter, Phil RIzzuto, Frank Messer, Jerry Cokenab abd Bukk Wgute for the Yankees and Joe Garagiola ,who did the Yankees and NBC Major League Baseball Telecasts as well. They all have their distinct styles and you try to pick things up from every announcer. Still, all in all, you have to be your own person and that’s what you are. I feel the same way in my work.
I wish you continued success and I enjoyed reading this blog. Keep at it. Wishing you continued success in your career and in life in general.
Stu Paul
Rob,
Sorry about my typos. I meant Jerry Coleman and Bill White. I hit the wrong keys! LOL!! Sorry.
Stu
Wishing you well as you take over the radio mic for the Astros. I hope you’re given the latitude and freedom that your predecessors, the very capable Dave Raymond and Brett Dolan, were not. Your writing on this blog is terrific.
